Interview with Artist

Describe your path to becoming an artist / designer

I was always creative from a young age. Arts & design were my strongest subjects at school. Attending Leeds College of Art & Design put me on the path to becoming a Graphic Designer.

Did you earn a degree in design?

I completed a Diploma in Design at Leeds College of Art. I then went on to study BA Hons in Graphic Design at Derby University.

Did you started working at agencies/freelance right after that?

Following University I worked in a number of in house design positions including JCB. I felt it important to gain some design experience before setting up my own business.
I set up OneTenEleven Media and became freelance in late 2008.

Did you have an “wow” moment when you knew that design and art were what you wanted to do?

While studying at Art College I knew I was on the right path, I was very fortunate to have the right advice at interview stage that matched my skill set to my course.

Have you had any mentors along the way?

I never had a specific mentor as such. University tutors were always supportive and I built a network of designer friends I could turn to for advice. Attending design conferences such as OFFF has helped keep me inspired and gain valuable advice from industry professionals.

Has there been a point in your life when you’ve taken a big risk to move forward?

My biggest risk was starting up on my own. I had a limited client base and not much in the way of savings at the time but I knew I had to take a chance. Life is short. Fortunately things worked out and 6 years later I am busier then ever and loving what I do.

Are you satisfied creatively?

Working as a freelancer satisfies me creatively as I have full creative control over my output of work. Sometimes client work takes over, it is important to maintain focus on personal work. Taking part in exhibitions such as Digital Decade helps keep my output fresh.

If you could give a piece of advice to a young person starting out, what would you say?

I would say follow your dreams, find your focus and go for it. Anything is possible with hard work and dedication.
